True & False of Orthodontics

The Facts… Determine What’s Best for You and Your Family!

There are many misunderstandings about orthodontic treatment and Invisalign. I would like to clarify and hopefully help you determine what is best for you and your loved ones when it comes to orthodontics and Invisalign.

False: Anyone who provides braces or Invisalign is an orthodontist.

True: Dentistry is a broad specialty that deals with teeth, gums, nerves, and jaw. Some dentists do offer braces and Invisalign, but it is not what they specialize in. Orthodontists receive the same training as dentist, but then they get additional education up to 3 years, to specialize in diagnosing and treating misalignment of the jaw and teeth.

False: Pre-teen children are too young and therefore do not need orthodontic treatment, because they still have baby teeth.

True: As a parent, you need to watch for problems in your children’s teeth beginning at the age of 7. It is best to catch any severe issues early before your child starts to fully develop. This allows the orthodontist to redirect growth and development plus avert more severe issues. Waiting too late in a child’s life could potentially increase the cost as well as increase treatment time and distress on your child. I highly recommend having your child’s first orthodontic checkup at age 7!

False: Braces are the only options when dealing with misaligned teeth.

True: I have said it before, and I will keep saying it! Braces have been a successful treatment, but they are not the only option when it comes to correcting misalignment. In fact, I can accomplish the same results as braces with the use of Invisalign and in a fraction of the usual time. Invisalign is highly effective, however, the treating doctor’s must be very well trained and experienced in using it.

False: Orthodontics treatment is too expensive so I could never afford to get treatment.

True: There are so many options available to make your investment in your health affordable. With Flexible Spending Account, Healthcare Savings Accounts, or even tax return money you can start your orthodontic transformation sooner than you think. Most orthodontic practices also provide flexible financing. For example, in my practice, you get to choose your down payment and your monthly payment plan or receive a 5% courtesy for paying in full.
